About ReadingWrite
ReadingWrite was founded by Katie Smith in June 2008. Katie is a licensed special education teacher and Certified Dyslexia Testing and Tutoring Specialist.
Katie attended the University of Minnesota where she earned a BA in Speech and Hearing Science in 2000. Then she went on to receive an MA in Special Education at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, Minnesota. During this time, Katie completed a practicum using the traditional Orton Gillingham methodology.
Katie started her teaching career as the lead teacher of an Autism Spectrum Disorders inclusive program in Edina, Minnesota. She worked in a middle school setting instructing students with Aspergers Syndrome for three years.
In 2005, Katie moved to Chicago, Illinois to complete an Educational Leadership program at DePaul University. While completing her administrative license coursework, she worked as a special education teacher in Glencoe, Illinois.
While working with students with learning disabilities, Katie's passion for teaching reading and spelling blossomed. Katie started researching dyslexia and science-based programs because she wasn't seeing the progress she expected from struggling readers.
Katie began her private practice in 2008 while living in Denver, Colorado. She was eager to work with students who have reading needs, especially dyslexic readers.
Katie and her family now live in Minnesota. Katie tests and tutors students at her office in St. Louis Park off of Hwy 100 and 394.
Katie finds it a privilege to help students with dyslexia and she wants to work with families dedicated to providing the very best instruction for their children.
