Tutoring - Tutoring in reading and spelling using an Orton-Gillingham-based system. Orton Gillingham is a research-based methodology that is the only proven system to be successful for improving reading, writing, and spelling skills inpeople with dyslexia.
- One-on-one tutoring. Tutoring sessions are scheduled at least 2 times a week lasting 1 hour. More tutoring sessions result in faster student progress.
- Katie is a certified tutor using the Barton Reading and Spelling System. This program was released in 1999 and has ten years of proven results. In 2003 it was approved by the California Department of Education as a successful method to tutor those who struggle with reading and spelling. The Barton Method also has all the essential components required by the No Child Left Behind Act and meets the National Institute of Health description of best practices for students with dyslexia.
- Comprehension, fluency and vocabulary skills are also woven into each session.
Success is defined as reading and spelling at the mid-ninth grade level - An "average" dyslexic student will show noticeable improvement after 24 sessions. This improvement will continue steadily throughout the tutoring.
